Maple Ridge Repair Cafes – Year 3 Launches on February 15, 2020!

“We Can Fix That!” – Maple Ridge’s Repair Cafés Launch Year 3!

MAPLE RIDGE, BC – On Saturday, February 15, Ridge Meadows Recycling Society is launching their third year of Repair Cafés at the Maple Ridge Library from 11am – 3pm with funding provided by Vancity’s enviroFund grant. Repair Cafés are pop-up events where residents can bring their broken items (small appliances, lamps, electronics, jewelry, clothing, small toys or furniture, etc.) and volunteer expert “fixers” are available to help residents learn to repair their stuff – for free!

“We’ve confirmed 8 Repair Cafes so far in 2020,” says Leanne Koehn, Community Engagement Manager for Ridge Meadows Recycling Society and Founder of Maple Ridge Repair Cafés, “We love connecting with residents, helping them learn how to fix stuff, and keeping things out of the landfill!

In the past two years, residents have brought 830 items to be fixed, including 36 clocks, 25 necklaces, 16 bikes, and over 50 pairs of pants!

Once again, Maple Ridge Repair Cafes will be partnering with the Maple Ridge Library, the Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society, the Celebrate Earth Day festival, GETI Fest, and Maple Ridge’s Car Free Day event in June. Sponsors include the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows NEWS and Haney Builders, who donated many of the tools needed to launch the Cafes in March, 2018.

Maple Ridge Repair Cafés aim to:

  1. Bring back repair into local society in a modern way
  2. Create opportunities for valuable repair expertise to be learned and shared
  3. Promote social connections in the local community
  4. Repair and reuse items that would’ve ended up in the landfill
  5. Encourage kids to get hands on with tools and learn how things work
  6. Provide support to others who wish to start up their own Repair Cafes

“In 2019, many people from other municipalities, provinces, and even countries contacted us or visited our Cafes to learn about the work we are doing,” continues Koehn, “We are excited to see more Repair Cafes start up around Metro Vancouver and know we are helping people as far away as Ontario and Scotland create successful Repair Cafes of their own!”

Many of the new Cafes are incorporating Tinkerbell Station, a made-in-Maple Ridge initiative to encourage kids to get hands-on with tools (“tinker”) and take things apart to see how they work. Kids can then get creative with the pieces and use Repair Café tools &  supplies to make robots, jewellery, or original creations.
