Repair Cafes – Maple Ridge

Next Repair Cafe is on Saturday, April 20 – part of Celebrate Earth Day!
Check out our upcoming 2024 Repair Cafe dates & locations!

On Saturday, February 10, Ridge Meadows Recycling Society launched their SEVENTH year of Repair Cafés at the Maple Ridge Library from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Repair Cafés are pop-up events where residents can bring their broken items and volunteer expert “fixers” are available to help residents learn how to repair their stuff. Items fixed in previous years include small appliances, lamps, electronics, jewelry, clothing, and small toys or furniture.

“We’ve scheduled 9 Repair Cafes for 2024,” says Leanne Koehn, Community Engagement Manager for Ridge Meadows Recycling Society and Coordinator of Maple Ridge Repair Cafés, “Many residents now know there are Repair Cafés held each month, so if something breaks or tears, they save it instead of throwing it out because they know there is an upcoming event where they can get it fixed!”

Since launching Repair Cafés in 2018, Ridge Meadows Recycling Society has hosted 37 events and residents have brought over 2000 items to be fixed, including 842 electrical appliances or tools, 572 textiles (clothing, bedding, stuffed animals, etc.), 216 pieces of jewelry, and 50 bicycles.  “Our volunteers enjoy seeing some of the more interesting items that come into the Cafes,” adds Koehn, “In 2023 we fixed an accordion, a drone, and an electric typewriter from the 1990s!”

Ridge Meadows Recycling Society is grateful to Vancity and Metro Vancouver for grants to help fund Maple Ridge Repair Cafes in 2024. The Society has worked to build sustainability in our community for over 50 years and looks forward to a year of continued partnerships with the Maple Ridge Library, the Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society, the Haney Farmers Market, the Maple Ridge Museum, the Ridge Meadows Quilters Guild, Celebrate Earth Day, the Fraser River Indigenous Society, GETI Fest, and more! Sponsors include the City of Maple Ridge, Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows NEWS, and Haney Builders, who donated many of the tools needed to first launch the Cafes.

Maple Ridge Repair Cafés aim to:

  1. Promote & encourage repair in a modern way
  2. Enable valuable repair expertise to be learned and shared
  3. Promote social connections in the local community
  4. Repair and reuse items that would’ve ended up in the landfill
  5. Encourage kids to get hands on with tools and learn how things work
  6. Provide support to others who wish to start up their own Repair Cafes

“We have an amazing team of fixers,” continues Koehn, “They are a very dedicated bunch who love new challenges. The social connections they make with each other and residents who visit the Cafés are also a big part of why they volunteer – they enjoy helping the community and we love hearing the stories and histories of items that come in to be fixed.”

Tinkerbell Station is a part of every Maple Ridge Repair Café and is a home-grown initiative to encourage kids to get hands-on with tools & “tinker” with items at the end of their life. Old toasters, tv remotes, keyboards, and more are provided as well as screwdrivers and pliers. With adult help, kids can take things apart to see how they work, then get creative and use Repair Café tools & supplies to make robots, jewelry, or their own original creations with the pieces. Tinkerbell herself will be joining the February 10 launch and the April 20 Earth Day Repair Café!

What is a Repair Cafe?
A Repair Café is a community-building event where volunteers with repair expertise help people in their community repair their broken belongings. We have volunteers who can fix electrical appliances, clothing repairs, bicycles, jewelry, small furniture, and can glue anything from ceramics to shoes!

Items to bring to Repair Cafes: clothing, electronics, appliances, bikes, jewelry and more! You bring it, we’ll try to fix it 🙂

If it’s too long to wait until our next event, check out this “Repair At Home” guide.

“FIXED!”

On March 24, 2018, we successfully launched our first Repair Cafe in Maple Ridge at the Maple Ridge Seniors Activity Centre.

Over 30 amazingly talented volunteers helped residents fix 70 different items, including broken lamps, clocks, ties, stools, bikes, jewellery, socks, and more! Kids and adults alike enjoyed taking things apart & building original creations at TINKERbell Station. We heard so many great stories about why each item was held onto and what it meant to the owner. Our “fixed” bell rang throughout the day and there were many happy people – visitors and fixers alike!

Huge thanks to all our volunteers, sponsors, supporters, and planning team for an amazing day! Thank you also to Metro Vancouver for having a camera crew there to capture the magic!

March 2, 2018:
“We Can Fix That!” – Maple Ridge’s First Repair Cafes Are A Go!!

Ridge Meadows Recycling Society has received funding from Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program to organize Maple Ridge’s first Repair Cafés. Repair Cafes are pop-up events where residents can bring their broken items (small appliances, jewelry, clothing, small toys or furniture, etc.) and there are tools, materials, and volunteer “fixers” available to help residents learn to repair their stuff!

“I have wanted to organize Repair Cafes locally since I stumbled across the idea a few years ago,” says Leanne Koehn, who works for Ridge Meadows Recycling Society and coordinates the annual Celebrate Earth Day event, “Through receiving the New Horizons for Seniors grant and finding other individuals and businesses who supported the idea, everything came together this year for us to start up and promote the first Repair Cafés alongside our Earth Day theme, ‘DIY: Make it, Grow it, Fix it, Share it!’”

Repair Cafés started about 8 years ago in the Netherlands, and their popularity has spread worldwide. In addition to keeping things out of the landfill, the Maple Ridge Repair Cafés aim to highlight the value of our local seniors who have lifetimes of experiences, knowledge, and skills to share.

“Our community has grown so quickly in the last couple years and as an emerging city, incredible initiatives like the Repair Café are vital contributions,” says Dan Ruimy, Member of Parliament at the time for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, “In our busy lives, it can be difficult to take the time to sew the rip on a pair of pants, or adjust the gears on a clock. Our seniors offer so much wisdom and experience, the Repair Café gives us the opportunity to sit down with them, relax, work together and fix the small things. What a fantastic way to engage with our seniors.”

TINKERbell Station:

The Repair Café Planning Team developed “TINKERbell Station” with artist Kat Wahamaa. This is a special area at the Repair Cafés designed to invite kids to get hands-on with tools, take things apart and explore how things work, and create upcycled art with the pieces. These activities also aim to encourage kids (especially girls) toward STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design, & Mathematics)-related interests and future careers.

Welcome!

What is a Repair Cafe?

“Repair Cafés are free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things (together). In the place where a Repair Café is located, you’ll find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. On clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, appliances, toys, et cetera. You’ll also find expert volunteers, with repair skills in all kinds of fields.

Visitors bring their broken items from home. Together with the specialists they start making their repairs in the Repair Café. It’s an ongoing learning process. If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Or you can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job.” -from www.repaircafe.org

Why a Repair Cafe?

“We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, and which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. The trouble is, lots of people have forgotten that they can repair things themselves or they no longer know how. Knowing how to make repairs is a skill quickly lost. Society doesn’t always show much appreciation for the people who still have this practical knowledge, and against their will they are often left standing on the sidelines. Their experience is never used, or hardly ever.

The Repair Café changes all that! People who might otherwise be sidelined are getting involved again. Valuable practical knowledge is getting passed on. Things are being used for longer and don’t have to be thrown away. This reduces the volume of raw materials and energy needed to make new products…

The Repair Café teaches people to see their possessions in a new light. And, once again, to appreciate their value. The Repair Café helps change people’s mindset. This is essential to kindle people’s enthusiasm for a sustainable society.

But most of all, the Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is. Why don’t you give it a go?”
