After a long COVID pause, our paper shredding service is now available again to the public!
Bring your paper to be shredded any time between 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday. Simply find a staff member in a safety vest and they will make arrangements for your shredding.
Cost for this service is by donation, suggested donation is $2.00 per banker’s box or equivalent. Cash only, no change given!
NOTE: our machine chunks the material, it doesn’t shred it into strips, it is then baled and shipped to manufacturers.

Celebrate Earth Day EVERY Day!
As the world celebrates Earth Month, local Maple Ridge Earth Day activities and the #emergemr contest are being extended for another month to May 22 and beyond!
“Live Local, Stay Safe”
This year, the Celebrate Earth Day Planning Committee encouraged residents to Live Local, Stay Safe, & “Emerge” through a Community Challenges suggestion list and interactive, online map of Maple Ridge posted at www.mrearthday.ca
“With the recent public health recommendations to stay within our own health authority, the warmer days, and sunshine, people are looking for fun stuff to do safely outdoors in their community,” says Celebrate Earth Day coordinator Leanne Koehn. “Our list and map are all about the cool places to visit in Maple Ridge – pet-friendly parks and patio dining, little free libraries, bubble tea places, nurseries to buy seeds or plants for gardening, and lots of other fun locations and activities in our own backyard.”
Residents are encouraged to look at the list & map at www.mrearthday.ca and find something that interests them, then go and check it out in person, staying safe through social distancing, mask-wearing, and hand washing.. The custom Google Earth Day map of Maple Ridge has been viewed over 2000 times and people have requested it stay up past Earth Day as the activities can be enjoyed year-round.
#emergemr Prize Winners & Contest Extension!!
The #emergemr contest is now up & running – on Earth Day, April 22, the first three winners were announced and organizers also announced that the contest would be extended, with the next prize draw happening on Friday, July 23.
“This gives people lots of time to take a quick picture during one of their “Emerge” outings & post it with the hashtag #emergemr to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram,” continues Koehn. “Anyone who posts a challenge photo and uses the hashtag will be entered in the prize draw. Don’t forget to switch your settings to “public” so we can see your photo!”
Support Local, Shop Local!
Prizes have been donated by the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association and other local shops and businesses. The first draw happened on April 22 and the next one will be on July 23.
“Downtown businesses need our support, especially now,” comments Ineke Boekhorst, Executive Director of the DMRBIA, “When you’re out & about, enjoy a little downtown time and shop local…we all win!”

This year, the Celebrate Earth Day Planning Committee is encouraging residents to “Live Local & Stay Safe” by releasing a suggested list of Community Challenges to get out and enjoy activities and explore hidden gems of Maple Ridge. The list and a custom, online map showing the challenge locations and more are posted at www.mrearthday.ca
This year’s activities encourage residents to get outdoors, get active, and explore their community while staying safe through social distancing, mask-wearing, and hand washing.
“Our theme for 2021 is ‘Emerge,’” says Celebrate Earth Day coordinator Leanne Koehn, “This can be seen as emerging from the cold & dark of winter into the warmth & light of spring, from the threat or damage of Covid-19 to the optimism of vaccines rolling out, or from people moving from isolation and inactivity back into their community.”
Join the Earth Day Community Challenge!
The community challenges come from various community organizations and individuals. Outdoor & Indoor Activity Challenges include hiking, climbing, skateboarding, & gardening and Community, Arts & Culture, and Local History Challenges include visiting various “hidden gem” locations in Maple Ridge – public art sites, heritage sites, restaurants with dog-friendly patios, unique businesses, little libraries, and so much more.
“It’s very exciting to see what people love about Maple Ridge,” Koehn continues, “HUB Cycling suggested lots of great biking routes, the ‘Museum Pics’ challenge residents to recreate historic photos, the Downtown BIA is launching the ‘Kindness Rocks’ challenge, you can Adopt-A-Butterfly with ARMS, and the City of Maple Ridge gave us a sneak peek at their Dog-Friendly Maple Ridge locations.”
Win Prizes!
Residents will be encouraged to take photos of their challenges & activities and post them to social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram) with the hashtag #emergemr. Anyone who posts a challenge photo and uses the hashtag will be entered in a prize draw which will take place on Earth Day.
Send in Your Suggestions!
Know a place you think should be added to the challenge map? Send in your suggestion with a photo, street address, & description to leanne@rmrecycling.org and maybe you’ll see it appear on the map!
Hope to see you EMERGE-ing in the community!

2020 was nothing like anyone expected. While it started out business as usual, everything changed mid-March as the Covid-19 pandemic threw everyone’s plans out the window and plunged us into months of unknown.
While we cancelled our Earth Day plans and the rest of our Repair Cafes, curbside recycling pickup and keeping the Maple Ridge Recycling Depot running were designated essential services. Events & education went online, and we rolled out a number of videos focusing on items accepted at the Depot and deep dives into each of the curbside boxes & bags. Virtual Depot Tours and visits to classrooms on Zoom filled the rest of the year as we all worked to flatten the curve.
With vaccines rolling out in the near future, 2021 will be a year to emerge, recover, and perhaps make the world a little bit better than it was before.
Huge thank you’s to all our volunteers and supporters – especially our amazing Board of Directors who adeptly navigated the uncertainty that was 2020.
